IN FLANDERS FIELDS

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

MEMORIAL DAY

"Did you know that Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day in honor of Union and Confederate soldiers who died during the Civil War. It has become a day of national observance for all Americans who lost their lives serving in a war."
The Cajuns.com    Stanley LeBlanc

We have an eye witness account of Gustave LaBauve's death in a Civil War battle, entitled "Death of a Hero."

Gilbert LaBauve, my great-grandfather,  included it in his journal:

MAY HIS SOUL AND THE SOULS OF ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED, THROUGH THE MERCY OF GOD,  REST IN PEACE.    AMEN.
